Connemara Meadow features sculpture by local artist Art Garcia

Untitled sculpture in Connemara Meadow Nature Preserve

The Connemara Meadow features five works on metal, the untitled sculpture of local artist Art Garcia.

Sculpture returned to the Meadow Nature Preserve as part of Connemara’s FallFest Celebration on Oct. 22.

The Untitled five works on metal are the work of local artist Art Garcia, whose public art projects can be found throughout Dallas-Fort Worth. The five pieces of enamel on steel each measure 18”x 9”x8’ each.

Art Garcia and his sculpture for Connemara

Art Garcia with his sculpture in the Meadow Nature Preserve.

As described in his Artist Statement, Garcia was inspired by a 1964 review that Donald Judd wrote for the Twentieth Century Engineering  exhibition at The Museum of Modern Art in which he said that “until lately art has been one thing and everything else something else. These structures are art and so is everything made.”

For Garcia, “Nature influences man, in return man creates objects to improve nature; in reality, his status. These structures are produced to enhance our environment; they comfort our existence.

“As we overburden the environment, the ecosystem becomes stressed, plants and animals, soil and water, and the air and ozone layer; the natural world becomes an afterthought,” Garcia continues. “How often does one hear the sound of the first bird chirp before the sunrise? Man relies on man, no longer do we rely on nature to provide comfort, nourishment and enlightenment. Seriality are the things man produces and nature inevitably adapts.”

Garcia is an artist/creative director with 41 years of design and public art experience. His success is the result of an approach that places equal emphasis on research and art to develop iconic installations that are both memorable and specific to their environment.

Since 1990 Garcia’s artwork has been honored in Communication Arts, Graphis, American Illustration and The Annual of The American Institute of Graphic Arts. He has produced work for The Cities of Dallas, El Paso, Fort Worth, Georgetown, Southlake and New Orleans.

Other collections include The Meadows School of Art, The University of Texas at Dallas, UT Southwestern, The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality and the US Census. Most recently, Garcia completed Texas Bluestem, a sculptural installation for Art on Henderson, in Dallas, Texas.

Past commercial and private installations Garcia has created and managed, encompass retail properties including signage for The Riverwalk in New Orleans and Topanga Plaza in Canoga Park, California. While communication is key to creating integrated environmental art, Garcia’s emphasis is to create artwork specific to the given environment and its community.

Garcia holds an Associated Degree from the Art Institute and Master of Arts in Art from the University of Dallas. In 1998 he founded Graphic Content on the principle of providing effective visual communication with extraordinary customer service. Garcia is a member of AIGA, America for the Arts and the Better Business Bureau. He has served on the board of the Dallas Advertising League and is a fellow member of AIGA Dallas. Currently he serves on the Visual Communications Advisory Board of Brookhaven College. Garcia has guest lectured on design at the Art Institute of Dallas, the University of North Texas and South Arkansas State University.
